How to optimize for AI Overviews
Google’s AI summaries increasingly decide which companies get noticed for a search at all. Here you’ll learn what AI Overviews are, why they matter, and how a solid GEO foundation helps you appear in them.
1. What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries from Google that appear directly above the classic search results. They combine information from several sources into one answer and link to the pages they draw from — before users visit any single website.
Unlike classic snippets, AI Overviews often answer more complex, multi-part questions and pull content from several pages at once. For companies this means it is no longer only your position among the ten blue links that counts, but whether your content even qualifies as a citable source.
2. Why do AI Overviews matter?
In the German market, roughly one in five Google searches already shows an AI answer. AI Overviews are therefore no longer a fringe phenomenon but an established part of search — with a direct influence on which brands become visible for a query at all.
For companies this means: when the AI summary already answers a question, it is often decided right there which providers get noticed — regardless of the classic ranking in the organic results below.
3. How do you appear in AI Overviews?
There is no guaranteed way to appear in AI Overviews on demand — but there are clear levers that increase the likelihood of your content being used as a source. This is the approach GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) takes:
- Structured content: a clear heading hierarchy (one H1, sensibly nested H2/H3), question-and-answer formats and concise paragraphs that answer a question right at the start — the way this page itself is built.
- Clear entities: companies, products and people should be named and described consistently across several trustworthy sources — on your own website as well as in industry portals or Wikipedia. This makes it easier for AI systems to identify an entity unambiguously.
- Source authority: AI Overviews preferentially draw on pages regarded as professionally reliable — with current, correct information and references from other recognized sources. Outdated or contradictory details weaken that authority.
- Schema.org / structured data: appropriate markup (e.g. FAQPage, Article, Organization) helps AI systems classify content in a machine-readable way — on top of the plain body text.
4. Frequently asked questions about AI Overviews
Can you actively influence AI Overviews?
Not directly, the way you would book an ad — but you can deliberately increase the likelihood of being cited as a source: through clearly structured content, consistent entities and demonstrable source authority. That is the core of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).
Do AI Overviews replace classic SEO?
No. A solid SEO foundation — technically clean, relevant, well linked — remains the basis. AI Overviews sit on top as an additional layer: they preferentially draw on pages that are already regarded as trustworthy and well structured.
Do AI Overviews exist for non-English searches too?
Yes. Google is rolling out AI Overviews across many languages, including German. In the German market, for example, roughly one in five Google searches already shows an AI answer — so this is not an English-only phenomenon.
How long does it take for a page to appear in AI Overviews?
There is no fixed timeframe. It depends on how often a page is crawled, how clearly it is structured and how established the underlying entity already is. GEO is an ongoing process, not a one-off measure.
